Read Or Be Average

January 13, 2013 By Matt Jabs

The goal of this article is to help inspire you to read more, and invest and act on your ideas more often.

Great Minds

Question One

Do you learn more from television or reading?

Of course it depends what you watch and read.

Turn off The Kardashians and turn on something that will help generate ideas.

Remember:

Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Both fiction and non-fiction books can provide benefit, so use your judgement and make sure they’re constructive.

Remember:

Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers. ~ Harry S. Truman

Question Two

Do you spend more time watching television or reading?

Your answer affects the way you feel. Which is good.

I’m hoping those feelings inspire change in your life.

You’re not alone. I struggle too and the freedom in my schedule makes it way too easy!

I’d like to report my time as spent watching documentaries about stewardship and healthy living, but that’s not always accurate.

Too often it’s Seinfeld, King of Queens, Gold Rush, Late Shows, etc.

Entertaining shows aren’t all bad; sometimes we need to laugh and unwind – BUT – it needs to be moderate and disciplined.

Finding Balance and Improving

The key is telling your time where to go.

If you follow my writing you know I’m always preaching, “tell your money where to go.” Well, this holds true for time too.

You have to schedule your time.

Schedule your TV time.

Schedule your reading time.

If you want to read more than you watch TV then schedule it and stick to it.

It’s really that simple.

My Experience

I find that the more I read, the more time I spend thinking – and talking – about ideas.

Let’s not waste time talking about other people or other things.

Let’s spend our time on ideas. Planning them, creating them, and implementing them.

THAT is how we can change the world.

What are you going to do?
